'My cat predicted my fiancé's cardiac arrest': 14-year-old cat who always sits on where it hurts suddenly starts sitting on her owner's fiancé's chest, warning them that something was wrong with his heart and consequently saving his life

When a cat's behavior changes, that is usually something incredibly important to notice. Cats have routines, and their routines are very, very important to them. Their routines may be silly, like waking you up at five in the morning for breakfast, but they matter. And sure, it may be something small and silly, like if your cat suddenly starts limping, and it turns out that she stretched too hard and got a cramp, or if your cat suddenly starts going number 1 in the sink, and the vet's conclusion is that she just wants to feel included when you go in that room to do your business. 

But a change in routine can mean something serious too. Like if your cat suddenly stops cleaning themselves or loses appetite, that might mean that they are sick. Or if your cat suddenly starts hating your boyfriend after two years of you being together, that means something about him, and you should pay attention. And if your cat, who is known for sitting 'where it hurts' when you don't feel well suddenly starts sitting on your fiancé's chest repeatedly, when she usually barely tolerates him, let alone sits on him, that… that probably means something too.

    I adopted my cat from a shelter 7 years ago. She was a 7 year old Tabby who was given up when her elderly owner entered a nursing home. From the second we met I knew she was my cat. We've spent the last 7 years moving several times. Multiple boyfriends etc.

    4 years ago I started dating my fiance and 2 years ago we moved in with him. He was never a cat person. They tolerated each other but, my cat was never overly affectionate with him like she was with me. Well two months ago she started sitting on his chest. Would not get off and would not stop.

    She often sits on whatever part of my body hurts; my head during migraines, my stomach during cramps etc. 3 days later my fiance had a cardiac arrest in his sleep. I woke up did CPR, called 911 etc. He literally died 3 times that day. After 5 days in a coma and 12 days in the ICU he came home with minimal brain damage and what the doctors call a miracle.

    Both of us are convinced my cat was trying to tell us something was wrong with his heart. The day he returned she sat by the window minutes before he arrived and then sat angrily guarding him on the chair.

  • Cats truly do sense things that we don't, and it's so important to listen to them. In the middle of the night, when we hear a strange noise, we only panic if our cat does. Because they know. And we're sure they know other things too, it's simply up to us to listen to them.

    CrimsonSuede The dad of an ex-boyfriend of mine had a cat. He also experienced heart attacks. Every single time he'd get one, his cat would insist on sitting on his chest, purring and kneading over him. To the point where, whenever his cat would do this, he'd go straight to the ER. And lo and behold, he'd be brought in for a heart attack.

    Tinabird20 OP I was lucky and first responders were fast I only did CPR for about 6 minutes (from what I've put together with the timeline from the 911 call). I'm glad yours was also a good outcome. I've been in therapy to deal with the trauma. I hope you also seek whatever you need. You're amazing because my arms and chest ached for days from only doing it for 6 minutes.

  • Oh, the anger is one of the best things about it. She was trying to be so obvious about it. You know she sits on you when you're in pain, and you know she barely tolerates this man, and suddenly she starts sitting on him, and you don't pay attention? Entirely your fault. She did the best that she could.

    Tinabird20 OP My dentist said her dog detected her infected tooth weeks before they could find it on the X- rays or anything. He wouldn't stop smelling her mouth and licking it.

    nomadichedgehog I believe it. When I was a teenager we had a cat that, one day, for no apparent reason, went up to my mum while she was lying in bed and scratched the right upper side of her abdomen. A day or two later, she experienced a gallbladder attack. My mum is convinced the cat knew and was trying to warn her.
